Devghat Dham

Rivers meeting are holy in Hindu belief, and Devghat — 'the ghat of the gods' — marks one of the most important confluences in Nepal. The Kali Gandaki, which rises beyond the Himalaya in Mustang, joins the Trishuli from the Langtang region, and together they become the Narayani, which flows on through Chitwan into India as the Gandak.

A place for the last years

Devghat is known for its ashrams where elderly Hindus come to live out their final years in prayer, hoping to die at a sacred place. The atmosphere is calm and devotional, with chanting, morning baths and cremation ghats by the water.

Temples and the bridge

Temples to Shiva, Vishnu, Radha-Krishna and other deities line the banks. A long suspension bridge sways over the river, with fine views of the confluence and the forested hills.

Makar Sankranti

On Maghe Sankranti in mid-January, tens of thousands of pilgrims come to bathe at the confluence, and the banks fill with stalls and camps.
